[Fixed] Office 2013 has stopped working!

11:57 AM

Microsoft Excel has stopped working.
Microsoft Word has stopped working.
Microsoft Outlook has stopped working.
Microsoft PowerPoint has stopped working.

Hi Friends,

Like you, I faced this problem after I upgraded my MS Office 2010 to MS Office 2013 and spent plenty amount of hours trying to fix it.
YES IT'S FRUSTRATED! Just look at the screenshot of me trying to find a solution on this:

The description for Event ID 0 from source MSOIDSVC.EXE cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

InitializeSvcAPI failed with hr = 0x80048883

By the way, just for your information; I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and Microsoft Office 2013 Standard 32-bit.

The Solutions

I have 2 known fixes here; before trying anything, please make sure you can run excel/winword/powerpoint/outlook in safe mode, otherwise these 2 fixes is not for you. I'll use Excel for example.
Press Win + R for run, then enter excel /safe
If Excel 2013 successful run in safe mode, proceed with the fixes, else go back to Google. Good luck.

Fix 1: If you have an Epson Scanner / ABBYY-FineReader

(ABBYY-FineReader is a software bundled together with Epson Scanner)

Fix 1a
1. Run Excel in safe mode. (Win + R ; "excel /safe")
2. Go to File - Options
3. Go to Add-ins
4. Choose COM Add-ins and press Go...
5. Uncheck every box and press OK.
Try to run Excel normally now.

Fix 1b
1. Go to Control Panel
2. Click on Uninstall a program
3. Right click on ABBYY-FineReader and click uninstall.
4. Restart if necessary.
Try to run Excel normally now.

Update: another fix for ABBYY-FineReader
Open ABBYY-FineReader, go to the help menu and search for new updates. Download the newest update. Uninstall ABBYY-FineReader and then reinstall it with the newly downloaded update. Now ABBYY-FineReader works flawlessly scanning into Word and Excel. Also, the newest update does not use add-ins to do it.
(thanks to Anonymous commenter on August 1, 2015)

Fix 2: Disable hardware acceleration

(This fixed MY problem!)

1. Run regedit (Win + R ; "regedit")
2. Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common
3. Create a New Key and name it "Graphics"
4. Select Graphics, right-click on the right panel and create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it DisableHardwareAcceleration.
5. Enter Value data as 1
Try to run Excel normally now.

For some reason, if you're using any USB docking station with DisplayLink driver, please uninstall or update the driver to atleast version 7.1 M1.

Good luck!

Give me a Like, a +1 or just drop a comment if this fix yours! :D

Regards,
Jo.

My problem started when i installed a epson printer. I removed the Abby reader and now everything works fine. Thx

Reply

Removed the Abby reader it works now. Thanks!

Reply

Any idea what caused the problem in Fix 2?
I recently upgraded to IE10 and the same problem occured (to IE only).. I had to disable the "accelerated graphics" in Internet Options to make it work

Reply
avatar

Try uninstall or update drivers for DisplayLink (http://www.displaylink.com/support/downloads.php) to atleast version 7.1 M1
Then undo all the fixes you did for Fix 2 (OR just simply edit the value of DisableHardwareAcceleration to 0)

Hi Jo,

none worked for me. Here is my problem.

I have a macro that exports a worksheet as pdf. code is working perfect for 2007, 2010 but creating problem in 2013. I ran the code in debug mode. everything is fine but as soon as the below line is executed. it says Excel has stopped working :

sht_Output.ExportAsFixedFormat xlTypePDF, sItem & "/" & filename, xlQualityStandard

I am not sure what the problem is. I am able to export as pdf manually but the VBA in excel 2013 is giving that error. I will highly appreciate a solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance

Reply
avatar

I don't exactly know why do you need a macro to export to PDF?
Just "Save as" the worksheet and choose "Save as type" as PDF?

Reply
avatar

I have an excel report with Emp Name , Address, phone No etc details.. These details are also stored in a separate sheet (say data_sheet). My macro basically
copies the data from data_sheet and pastes them in report and the save the report as pdf.

This is an automatic process to generate pdf reports for all employees and works great in excel 2007, 2010.

need help to do this in excel 2013

Hi Joe,

The reason i am using a macro to save sheet as pdf is because i have a report with Emp Name , Address, phone No etc details. this report is being produced for n no of employees.

Details of these n employees are stored in a separate sheet (say data_sheet).

My macro basically copies the data from data_sheet and pastes them in report and then save the report as pdf.

This is an automatic process to generate pdf reports for all employees and works great in excel 2007, 2010.

need help to do this in excel 2013

statement that i am using is :

sht_Output.ExportAsFixedFormat xlTypePDF, sItem & "/" & filename, xlQualityStandard

I am not sure what the problem is. I am able to export as pdf manually but the VBA in excel 2013 is giving that error. I will highly appreciate a solution to this problem.

hello

Windows can check online for a solution to the problem the next time you go online.
Check online for a solution later and close the program
Close the program

I should just add my remarks to help others since my conclusions are definitive.

The Control Panel repair (local or online) didn't do anything except force me to find my license keys.

Fix 1a worked for me, since installing my Epson printer is apparently what caused the ABBYY software to be installed. This included the "COM add-in" for Office 2013, and that is what broke things. It broke, unbeknownst to me, after I installed the printer. I did not need to uninstall the software, only disable (uncheck) the add-in from the Options in BOTH programs while in /safe mode, and then I could run Word and Excel normally without incident.

Thanks for the help, OP!!

All I had to do was install the DisplayLink update. Totally random but IT WORKED!!! Can't thank you enough. I've spent hours on this and days without MS products on my office computer so...hooray!

Reply
avatar

Made the mistake of trying the Microsoft sites....yep....not much help but your suggestions worked a treat. We must like punishment from MS - pay for a product that does not work out of the "box" and than spend time fixing the product instead of using it!!!

Reply
avatar

THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting solutions to this issue!!!!!!!!! 2.5 hours of frustration uninstalling, reinstalling and trouble shooting this problem. Like other commenters, Microsoft trouble shooting was NO help! I tried fix # 1 and # 2 and neither worked for me. Uninstalling Abbyy Fine Reader was the fix! Thanks again!!! :)

thank you very much, fix2 worked. I spent long time last time when i had trial version of office 365 where word was hanging. Now i had bought office 2013, again word was not working. Spent late night yesterday on this for 2-3 hrs and couldn't find any solution. This is great. Just one query, does the fix 2 - to disable HW acceleration have any affect on office? is it by default enabled and what is the use of it?

Win7-64, Office2013, Epson WF-5320
All Office 2013 Apps started Splash Screen crash after installing Epson Suite. Uninstalling all Epson Software was temporary fix (but needed printer to work). Reinstalled Epson Suite. Used SafeMode startup of each app and deactivated COM Add-ins. Then, uninstalled AABBY OCR from Programs and Features (so problem could not come back). Epson will still Print, Scan, and Fax but will have to look elsewhere if needing OCR functionality.

I had this problem and none of the above worked for me. Didn't have any of the offending add-ons and disabling hardware acceleration didn't fix it. But Word/Excel had been working fine until sometime recently when they suddenly stopped working. So I did a system restore back to a restore point prior to a recent Windows "critical update" and voila, everything works again!

How in the name of everything sacred Microsoft can get away with releasing products as fragile and poorly engineered as this defeats me. I am so grateful my other computer is an Apple Mac!!

Making changes directly in registry is not a good idea.

For Fix 2, you can disable hardware acceleration without editing registry.
On top left, go to File|Options|Advanced| Scroll all the way down and Check the box for 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'.

That is correct, but when you can't run any office apps (MS XXXXX has stopped working) and I don't think you can select disable hardware acceleration at safe mode, have to edit registry as last resort

Fix 2 worked for me as well, thank god I was about to spike my laptop on the plane yesterday. My issue was the following

Try to open any microsoft office file that was previously created (word, excel, etc..) and it would fail to open, then ask me to start in safe mode. I would have to physically launch excel in safe mode, then close, then re-open normally, then open a file for it work properly. Adding the disable parameter corrected all of my office problems.

Hi all, I know this post is more than likely late but for anyone else receiving the dreaded Outlook has stopped working error (Office365 / outlook 2013).
Just to mention, I have just about tried all the solutions there are to fix this issue to no avail and I am not even going to mention all the solutions as there are plenty. In case you feel that you have also exhausted all options, please continue reading|:
Firstly my issue was caused due to a bad .dll file in c:\Windows\system32\ folder, more specifically the uiAutomationCore.DLL file. My computer had some bad clusters on the hard drive and after running chkdsk /r I noted that the above file in question was located at that bad cluster. So after windows marked the bad clusters as "BAD" and not to use them anymore, I copied the uiAutomationCore.DLL form another computer with the same specs and same OS (Windows 7) and replaced my corrupted one with the copied one.
Guess what, no more Outlook App crashes.
Please note that should you take this advice and ruin your computer in the process, it is totally at your own risk. It worked for me though.
I really hope that this bit of information can help someone else experiencing the same issues and if not, Good luck in your journey to find a solution to this very common problem!

I don't quite know exactly how to implement #2, particularly step 4. I don't know what "...create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value..." means. Can someone spell it out more clearly?

Just tried the quickest way-fix 1a and it works! I believe fix 1b plays the same role but just sweep off the incompatible modules thoroughly. Fantastic solution!
Thank you so much!

Worked for me. Thank you so much! I have Outlook 2013 on Win 8.1.
Problem - Outlook would freeze at loading profile and never start. It would start in safe mode but hang after some time.

Thanks again.

I spent way too much time on this, then I found this blog. I am NOT a computer technician, so going into the registry made me extremely nervous. However, desperate times call for desperate measures. After banging my head with disabling Add-ins, repairing/uninstalling/re-installing Office, I tried Option 2 to fix my Outlook. Easy as pie, problem solved! This is genius - thank you! Wished you worked for Microsoft.

Tried everything imaginable. I don't have ABBYY installed, but I DO have an external USB Dock. After reading your solution (and before trying to fool around with all that display driver) I tried your "Fix 2" - it worked for me!
Thanks a lot!
